HOW IT ALL BEGAN
In 2003 Insignia’s owners Michael and Elizabeth Riley decided to take a shot at the American dream and open their own business. INSIGNIA, originally named A Good Sign, was conceived to be the area’s premier manufacturer of custom handmade, historic and three-dimensional signs. At that time, the signs the couple sold were made of wood and metal, handcrafted and painstakingly painted and usually lettered with cut vinyl graphics. It was a dirty, messy, labor intensive job but the Rileys learned a lot about graphics, business, and life.
Then one day in 2005, Michael got a phone call and was asked to letter a large fleet of vans. The deadline was looming near and there was no way they could finish the job with their one tiny vinyl cutter. Michael made the decision to jump head first into the 20th century and purchase a small 3′ wide digital printer to fulfill the order. Even before the ink dried on the payment check for those vans, the gears were turning in Michael’s head and he realized there was a vast untapped market in Dayton for providing full-color digital graphics.
The rest, as they say, is history. That 3′ printer chugged along for a year before being replaced with the firm’s first 5′ Mimaki solvent inkjet. A second 5′ Mimaki was added a couple years later, along with a 5′ digital die cutter, wide format laminator, and all of the latest and greatest in digital prepress and finishing equipment. Around this same time, Michael and Elizabeth decided to rebrand A Good Sign as INSIGNIA, to target the wide format full color market, leaving the days of hand painting wooden signs in the dust.
Today, the staff of INSIGNIA has nearly a half-century of experience in most facets of the graphics and display industry. Michael and Elizabeth have worked tirelessly to hire and retain skilled employees who understand what they are doing, why they are doing it, and most importantly take tremendous pride in everything they touch.
